The chemical properties of metals are used in many ways in technical chemical applications. Metal powders are used either as chemical reaction partners (“reactant”), energy sources or catalysts. Both “flakes” of metal powder are used as well as spray grit made of aluminium, copper and copper alloys. Selection depends on the application and, in most cases, is made per customer.
Pyrotechnics & Civil explosives
In pyrotechnics, lamellar aluminium powders and flakes are used in addition to other fuels and effect makers in firecrackers and small rockets (sound effects), in fireworks (propellant and light effects), for stage effects, in sparklers and in other pyrotechnical products.
Titanium dioxide industry
Titanium dioxide is the most important white pigment worldwide. The annual demand is 4 to 5 million tons per year. About half is used in the pigment industry and the rest in coloring plastics, in printing inks and in the paper industry.
Ceramic catalyst carriers and filter materials
Finely distributed metals are often used in the primary chemical industry as catalysts. An example of the use of aluminium processed by SCHLENK is the manufacture of “Ziegler catalysts” (aluminium alkyls) for the production of ...
